Mentoring

ICHS Mentoring Programme
The ICHS Mentoring Programme provides additional support for selected Senior Phase pupils as they prepare for their Qualifications Scotland examinations.
Through regular meetings with a member of staff, pupils are supported to:
- plan and organise their revision;
- use effective study techniques;
- set goals and review their progress;
- identify priorities and areas for improvement;
- overcome barriers to learning; and
- build confidence, motivation and independence.
Mentors provide guidance, encouragement and support with planning. Mentoring does not replace classroom teaching, subject-specific support or the pupil's responsibility to complete agreed actions.
How pupils are selected
The programme is a targeted form of support and is not a universal one-to-one mentoring offer.
Pupils are identified through professional discussion involving relevant school staff. A range of information may be considered, including progress, attainment, attendance, engagement, assessment demands, aspirations, and feedback from teachers. No single factor determines selection.
Being selected does not mean that a pupil is failing or has done anything wrong. It means that the school believes additional structure, encouragement or regular review may help the pupil make further progress.
Parents and carers will be contacted if their young person is selected.
Reviewing participation
Mentoring is normally provided for a defined period and reviewed regularly. Depending on progress and need, mentoring may continue or conclude. Other pupils may then be invited to join the programme.
The pupils receiving mentoring may therefore change throughout the school year. This allows the school to respond to changing needs and make the best use of the support available.
Working together
Parents and carers can support the programme by encouraging attendance at mentoring meetings, discussing agreed goals and helping their young person maintain a balanced routine that includes study, rest and wellbeing.
By working together, we aim to help each participating pupil make positive progress and work towards achieving their full potential.

Frequently asked questions
Does selection mean my young person is failing?
No. Mentoring is an additional opportunity to provide structure, encouragement and practical support. Pupils may be selected for a range of reasons, including helping them work towards an aspirational goal.
Is mentoring available to every pupil?
Individual mentoring is a targeted programme and is provided to selected pupils. It is one part of the school's wider exam-support offer.
Study-skills resources and other exam-support opportunities remain available to all pupils.
Can I request mentoring for my young person?
Parents and carers are welcome to contact the school to discuss their young person's support. A request can be considered, but it will not automatically result in a mentoring place. Decisions are based on the pupil's identified needs, professional discussion and the mentoring capacity available at that time.
Can pupils taking part change during the year?
Yes. Mentoring is reviewed regularly. Some pupils may complete the programme while other pupils may be invited to join.
This allows the school to respond to changing needs throughout the year.
How long will my young person receive mentoring?
Mentoring is normally offered for a defined period and then reviewed. It may continue or conclude depending on the young person's progress, needs and agreed next steps. Parents and carers will be informed of significant changes to their young person's mentoring arrangements.
Is mentoring the same as subject tuition?
No. Mentors support planning, target-setting, motivation and effective approaches to revision. Subject teaching and subject-specific support continue to be provided through class teachers, supported study and other appropriate exam-support opportunities.
What support is available if my young person is not selected?
All pupils can use the ICHS Study Skills and Techniques Pack. Pupils can also access the wider support opportunities listed on the school's Exam Support page, including supported study, Easter School, immersion classes, E-Sgoil support, Achieve and supervised study arrangements where available.
