Learner Pathways & Careers

Inveralmond CHS Learner Pathways Discussions

What Are Learner Pathways?

Each year in Inveralmond CHS, young people are supported to transition from one stage of their education to the next. From S2 onwards, pupils make decisions about their pathway, supported by parents/carers, partners and school staff.

Our Learner Pathways discussions help our young people make informed subject choices that support their strengths, interests, and next steps beyond school.

Learner Pathways outline the subjects and qualifications available at each stage, how choices connect to senior phase options, and possible routes to university. college, apprenticeships, training, or employment. They also show progression routes through each department in the school and how these can link together to ensure young people leave school with as many qualifications at as high a level as possible so that they can succeed in progressing to their next planned destination beyond school.

How the Process Works at Inveralmond CHS

1. Information Sharing: Pathway information issued through assemblies, PSE, and this webpage.

2. Research & Guidance: Young people should explore courses in discussion with guidance staff and subject teachers. There Inveralmond CHS Learner Pathway website is also available but this can only be accessed by pupils through their Glow account. The information in this website will eventually be transferred to the school website.

3. Conversations: Learner conversations with the Senior Leadership Team, Principal Teachers Curriculum/Support and subject teachers.

4. Choice Submission: Course choices submitted during the learner pathways meeting by the published deadlines.

5. Timetabling & Confirmation: Choices considered; allocations confirmed as early as possible upon the creation of the new timetable in June.

Other Useful Documents

Over the last few years, Applications of Maths has become more popular in schools. Teachers of Maths and the PTC Maths have strategies in place to ensure that your young person knows whether their strength and potential lies in Maths, or Applications of Maths. This document below provides additional information specifically relating to careers. It is important to note that this information is continually evolving, so staff will

check any individual requirements for Maths pathways with your young person in their pathways meeting.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How many subjects should I choose?

This depends on your stage and the structure of the Inveralmond CHS timetable. Check the presentation for your stage and the course choice form for the exact number.

Can I change my choices later?

We'll try to accommodate changes within published timelines; however, staffing and timetable constraints apply.

What if a course is oversubscribed?

We use fair criteria (e.g., progression routes, prior attainment, learner conversations, prior attendance, and engagement levels). We'll discuss alternatives if needed.

How do college options fit?

They can be part of your senior phase learner pathways conversation.

Who do I contact if I need further support?

If you would like to talk about any aspect of your child's learner pathways meeting, please contact the school:

· Phone: 01506 280700
· Email: wlinveralmond-chs@westlothian.org.uk

We are here to help with any questions about the process, timelines, or next steps.

When calling Inveralmond Community High School, you will be asked to select an option so that you can be connected with the right team in the school. Our staff have been trained to ask you a few questions so that they can direct your call to the person or team who is best placed to support you with your query.

In line with our school values, please be patient and kind while they gather all the information they need from you. In order to direct your query staff will need to ask for your full name; if you are calling about a pupil they will ask for the pupils' full name and your relationship to the pupil. It would also be helpful if you could tell us the pupil's tutor class or house, and in order for us to prioritise calls we will need details of what your query relates to.
